Have you always had the dream of learning to fly?
Always wondered what it was like, but never had the chance?
Learning to Fly
Here's a quick rundown on flight training. There's more information on Ultralight Flight Training available on the website of Recreational Aviation Australia (RA-Aus). The RA-Aus is the governing body of recreational flying in Australia.
- To learn to fly, you must be aged 15 years or older, and meet the standard of medical fitness required for a driver's licence.
- You'll need to obtain a Student Pilot Certificate from the RA-Aus. This is currently $160. This includes the issue of the Student Pilot Certificate, 3rd party insurance cover, Operations and Technical Manuals, first 12 months RA-Aus membership and 12 months subscription to the monthly Recreational Aviation Australia magazine. This journal is the official means of RA-Aus board and executive communication to the members of the association.)
- If you are ab-initio (no current flying qualification or experience), you will need to complete at least 20 hours of flight training.
- If you currently hold a"C" rating in gliding, or hold a general aviation PPL or higher license, you may qualify in only 5 hours. Glider pilots will need to pass a Basic Aeronautical Knowledge exam.
- In addition to flying training, you'll also learn the theory side of aeronautics. You'll study sections of Basic Aeronautical Knowledge (BAK), flight rules and radio operations. This will be tested in a written examination with multiple choice answers.
